THE RUN FOR CHRISTINE
hellraisin'
THURSDAY, MARCH 11 - 7:22 AM - GOLDEN GATE PARK
1.5 miles. 10:44. 331 miles in total.
Could you believe this shit? My foot hurts. I didn't twist it or turn
it. Nothing. And it kills. Motherfucker.
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 10 - 7:29 AM - GOLDEN GATE PARK
3.5 miles. 31:29. 329.5 miles in total.
Don't get hurt. Don't get hurt. Don't get hurt. Don't get hurt. Don't
get hurt. Don't get hurt. Don't get hurt. Don't get hurt. Don't get hurt.
Don't get hurt. OK. Good run.
SUNDAY, MARCH 7 - 10:30 AM - CLOVE LAKES PARK
2 miles. 18:00. 326 miles in total.
Don't get hurt. Don't get hurt. Don't get hurt. Go for a quick run in
the park with your brother and Snickers. Happy Birthday to me. Don't get
hurt. Don't get hurt. Don't get hurt. Don't get hurt. Don't get hurt. Don't
get hurt. Don't get hurt. OK. Good run.
SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 29 - 10:29 AM - GOLDEN GATE PARK + LAND'S END + PANHANDLE
12 miles. 114:29. 324 miles in total.
I just wanted to get one more long run in before the big long run. I
wanted to practice when to use my Gu. I wanted to run slow and speed up later.
I wanted to make up for hours lost this week because of work. I wanted to
do all this. Accomplished. Now bring on the 26.2.
MONDAY, FEBRUARY 23 - 7:22 AM - GOLDEN GATE PARK
3.5 miles. 35:57. 312 miles in total.
Nothing big here. None of these small quick runs during the week are
terribly momentous. And if they are, something's gone wrong. Drastically
wrong. Horrifically wrong. I'm gonna end this post before I jinx myself.
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 21 - 8:14 AM - GOLDEN GATE PARK AND LAND'S END
10 miles. 92:00. 308.5 miles in total.
I jumpstarted this one a little quicker than normal, trying to pick up
the pace at the start. Yes, I know I'm gonna do the opposite when I run
the marathon, but a little speed training can't hurt none. Plus, I got a
softball game later, so I just wanted to get this over with.
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 20 - 7:27 AM - GOLDEN GATE PARK
3.5 miles. 33:19. 298.5 miles in total.
Well, I planned on getting some miles in while I was working in Nashville,
but unfortunately it was 40 degreees every morning and that's just a little
too cold for me. Seriously. But I'm back in the 50ish warmth of San Fran,
and it feels great, even though I am jetlagged and discombobulated. But
I am on a Dolly Parton high.
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 14 - 8:31 AM - SOMEWHERE IN NAPA VALLEY
20 miles. 3:17:56. 295 miles in total.
This is what I've learned from this long run: That my knee will go flat
around 15 miles in. That if I slow down at the start, I may be able to
speed up at the end and make up time lost. That I should take Ibuprofin around
mile #10. That the people in Team In Training are the greatest people around.
That if you're reading a John Steinbeck novel, you should go for a run in
Napa Valley. And that if you eat at a restaurant called Downtown Joe's in
Napa, prepare your food to go because it is super slow, party of 25 or not.
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 12 - 7:31 AM - GOLDEN GATE PARK
3.5 miles. 34:30. 275 miles in total.
Two days in a row. How 'bout them apples? Got a twenty-miler this weekend
with Team-in-Training. I wish I spent more time with them. At least I get
to spend time with Howard Stern every morning. Daniel Carver is on today.
Me, Howard and Daniel, running 3.5 miles together.
WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 11 - 7:29 AM - GOLDEN GATE PARK
3.5 miles. 34:30. 271.5 miles in total.
It's hard getting my morning miles in, with all the extra work I've been
doing and my long hours and all that. But what can I do? I can't run at
night when I get home - at least, it wouldn't be safe at 2:30 AM. So here
I am, sporadically yours on the asphalt.
SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 8 - 12:23 AM - GOLDEN GATE PARK AND LAND'S END
10 miles. 94:30. 268 miles in total.
This is nothing but a nice easy run on one of the nicest days we've had
here in awhile. I have a 20-miler coming up next week, and I just don't
want to get hurt leading up to it.
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 5 - 7:23 AM - GOLDEN GATE PARK
3.5 miles. 34:30. 258 miles in total.
I fully wanted to go into maximum overdrive in my training, but I've
been coming home from work at 1 AM every night and there's priorities. These
weekday runs are just to keep your momentum going anyway. Shame I don't have
the time to keep it up. Well, as long as I get my miles in on the weekend,
which I do and I will. Anyway, Howard's recording his 2,000 episode on E!,
and he's got Erica the Gymnast on, and I can distinctly remembering her crying
when Howard spanked her. The reason I bring that up is because that episode
garnered the highest ranking for any show to ever air on E!. And that
made me laugh.
SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 1 - 7:30 AM - GOLDEN GATE PARK
SF HALF MARATHON PRESENTED BY HOME DEPOT
13 miles + 2.5 miles. 2:03:47 + 22:22. 254.5 miles in total.
Funny how Team in Training works: They give you specific directions where
to meet you, but they're always somewhere else when you get there. But
I found them, and together we ran two miles. Kinda nice for a warm-up. I
need to remember to do that before the Marathon; then again, I'm sure they'll
remind me. And off we went. They told me to run the first couple of miles
very slowly, so I kept a ten minute pace. And from then on, I ran at a 9:30
mile pace, which is still slow for me but the point is to finish it. I paced
myself well between water breaks and goo (which I forgot to bring with me
but there was plenty to grab on the sidelines). Anyway, I got to mile #11,
and I decided to pick it up for the final two miles at about a 8:30/9 minute
pace. So my last two miles were my fastest. Not so bad, huh? And at the
finish line, I wasn't even slightly tired with the exception of my knees,
but when you've got pins and screws inside you and it's raining outside,
well, what would you expect? I'll tell you what was great: passing and seeing
other Team-In-Trainers and exchanging "Go Team". It's stupid, but it really
helps seeing familiar faces urging you on. I do need to buy an i-pod; I did
get bored and I do think music will pick up my pace when my mind begins to
sleep some. All in all, I can't wait to kick the marathon's ass in a month
and a half.
